Many, in the world of Shinma, fully understand the danger and potency of the mage, those men and women that utilize the power of etherium to effect the world around them. These men and women are feared for their power to influence the minds of others as well as to create powerful natural attacks. Even more fearsome are the sorcerers and sorceresses, individuals whose natural connection to the leylines, channels of mystical energy, is so potent that they are able to access it without study. Thankfully, those that are capable of even connecting to this mystical energy source are few and far between and those that are not sanctioned by the Mage Council are hunted fervently by the Mage Hunters.
Yet fewer still, less known and even less understood than the mages, exist the psions, men and women who, despite lacking a connection to etherium, are capable of altering the world around them. This is what makes the power of psions enticing for many, and there are books written by charlatans on how to harness this power. Unfortunately this is something that one must be born with in order to truly access and plumb the depths of this power, though this doesn’t stop the desperate from trying to get it.
The biggest difference between the mages of the world and psions, besides the fact that mages use etherium and psions don’t, is the way that said power can be utilized. Due to their lack of connection to etherium, psionics utilize their body’s own natural stamina and willpower to influence the world at large. What this leads to are semi-magical abilities that are devastatingly powerful, but lack the same subtlety and nuance that many spells possess. The most common ability psions possess is telekinesis or manipulation of physical objects mentally, but there are others: cryokinesis, pyrokinesis and ergokinesis, to name a few.
Very few psions ever reach the point of true power, simply because they are either satisfied in using their abilities to move things or because they’re afraid of the mage hunters. While the branding doesn’t affect them like it does mages, the fact of being called out in front of others often makes psions afraid. What few psions have managed to band together, have formed what could be considered their version of the mage council, but they meet so rarely and are so spread out that it is difficult to create a formal organization. The mage hunters often have a bit of trouble finding psions, thankfully. The best way to tell that one is a psion is a very faint aura of color that seems to surround someone when their power is active. The color of said aura is dependent on the person.
Should a psion use any of their unique abilities, when out of stamina, then their health is drained at 2x the spell's stamina cost.
