Daemonium
Demons, Devils, Imps, Succubus, Balor, Fallen Gods, Specters. All these and more are terms coined by the concept of the Daemon. The concept of a Daemon is not something so easily explained away as simply being a different species found within the bowels of hell or the void. Daemon are effectively a single thing-- the soul of a being that has fallen into the manifestations of their darkest personality traits. Initially, this may seem simple, "just human souls perverted by a sin", but it's not that simple by any means.
Daemon are the soul of any species, from the smallest mouse to a god, or to something as simple as a tree. If it ever had a conscious, ever had a soul, then it can become a Daemon. Due to this, Daemon are effectively incorporeal in their natural state, they are unable to physically interact with the world around them in any way, and only the most ancient and powerful can even appear or speak to those on the material plane of existence, much like normal spirits and ghosts. However, Daemon are spirits that have fallen to their negative emotions.
This can be something as simple as a "Sin", such as greed or lust, or it can be a combination thereof. A Daemon's "form" is the shape that reflects their own personality, their own negative traits and concepts of themselves. A Daemon that hungers for money and material possessions may take on a form similar to an imp due to their desire to be small, difficult to notice and hold great agility. A Daemon that desires the pleasures of the flesh and to attract and drain the life from others may have a physical form of an attractive humanoid with tainted physical traits such as horns and black eyes.
In essence, the physical form of a Daemon fits their subconscious and personality, often making them the "perform form" for themselves on instinct after their fall into the darkness is completed.
Some believe that the Dark Divine Ramfiaus "created" the Daemon, but he did nothing of the sort. The Daemon are a concept that had existed since the dawn of time itself, he was simply the first being to fall, and become one. He shepherded the concept into the universe, but the ancient magic that causes the transformation, turning one into a Daemon is not any one beings doing-- but is instead a natural law of the very universe itself. Some dark magics, contracts, and so forth can speed up the process, but the actual change is something that happens purely due to the emotional state of a soul, and nothing more.
It is worth noting that Daemon's physical forms still cannot interact with the world normally, instead, they must be summoned by a being on the material plane of existence and feed off their summoners mana or similar fuel sources in order to sustain themselves, limiting their powers based on their summoner in question. However, there are exceptions to this rule, and that is the concept of a possession-- something that can happen both willingly, or against their hosts will.
Possession
The concept of possession is when a powerful Daemon of any sort forcibly takes over the body of a living being. Once more, this can be anything that holds consciousness or a spirit of its own. This possession allows the user to bond to the body and use it for a time, however, the Daemon must constantly keep the spirit of their host suppressed in order to retain control. While possessing a living body, a Daemon is able to use a limited spectrum of their dark powers, passively enhancing their host with their dark energies. Possessed individuals tend to hold inhuman physical traits such as elongated canines, animal-like eyes, unusual smells, and so forth as well as their enhanced physical capabilities.
However, possession is not limited to the living, nor is it limited to forcibly taking over a body.
Vampires: Some Daemon are strong enough to take over the bodies of the dead, a container to hold their soul without the need for another soul acting as a support structure to keep them rooted to the material plane. Undead that have been possessed by Daemon are not like the normal undead, as the dark energies mend the rotten flesh and re-constitutes the body despite it being dead, allowing it to function similarly to a living form at the cost of needing to constantly intake the tissue of the living. Usually, this is done by draining blood, but technically any living flesh will do. Vampires can also be made from an individual dying, and their soul being so dark as they die that they re-bind themselves to their corpse to become vampires on their own instead of being a dead body possessed by a Daemon. For further details on Vampires, see their specific article of lore.
Apostles: Also known as "contractors". If at any time throughout history there was a rumor of a "demon walking the material world", rest assured that it was an Apostle. Apostle are living beings that have made a contract of some sort, or enslaved, a Daemon soul to their own body. In exchange for accessing some of the Daemons power, the living being lives with the Daemon in their mind and subconscious (to what degree depends on the Daemons power, and the willpower of the living being, as well as the details of the contract) allowing the Daemon to interact, in an admittedly limited way, with the material world. These beings have the ability to transform into the form of the Daemon inside them's physical manifestation, or a mixture of it bonded with their own bodies.
Dámon-Khá: Diluted Daemon, the Dámon-Khá are unique in that they are the offspring of a Daemon that has been summoned and sustained by magic in order to breed with a non-Daemon (in which case the Dámon-Khá must be born in the material plane or it will die at birth), or the child of an Apostle, or Possessed breeding with a living being. These Partial-Daemon hold diluted physical traits of their dark heritage and are similar in abilities to an Apostle without the ability to transform into a true Daemon's shape without outside influence enhancing their Daemonic heritage even further.
